Recently in the press, there has been a lot of coverage with regard to stolen government and financial institutions laptops.  While the loss of the hardware is tolerable, these laptops contained very sensitive financial and personal information that has put individuals at risk of being victims of indentify theft.

This has lead to much embarassment on the part of the companies and institutions involved - particularly when this could have been easily prevented and with totally free software!  Have you considered the consequences should your laptop be lost of stolen?

So how do you protect yourself?

By encrypting (scrambling) the device.

TrueCrypt
Truecrypt is free, open source software that can be used to guarantee that as long as you keep your passphrase safe, your data will be totally unreadable should the laptop be lost or stolen.
Now you might ask, if its free, how can it be that effective, shouldnt I be paying for a more robust solution?
In the case of security software it becomes very important that it IS free and open source (which means the programmers code is downloadable also), for two reasons.
  • They have no commercial interest
  • The code can be scrutinised by experts to make sure its as robust as they claim.
However like all things in IT security, there is a trade off between flexibility and security.

  • You need to keep a copy of your TrueCrypt rescue CD (in case of a hard disk fault)
  • You need to remember your passphrase (if you forget it, your data is as good as gone!, unless you have a backup)
  • You must type in your passphrase every time you start your computer

This is VERY IMPORTANT and worth repeating,

  • If you forget your truecrypt passphrase - you lose access to your data on that disk forever.
  • If you lose your rescue CD and it becomes necessary to use it to repair the encryption, you lose access to your data on that disk forever.

Truecrypt is freely downloadable from http://www.truecrypt.org and the whole disk encryption solution is available to Microsoft Windows users only.

Our Managed Encryption Solution
If you would like all the benefits of encryption without the headache, we offer a fully managed encryption solution!

The encryption process itself can be daunting to the novice user and also, passphrases are forgotten and rescue disks are lost or damaged.

We will perform the initial encryption
We will take responsibility for managing your rescue CD and passphrase should you require these items.

We have strict controls in place to make sure that the passphrase and the asset (your laptop) never meet up under false pretenses.

If your data is important and this is a concern for you, fill in our "request a callback" form below and we will be happy to assist you when possible.
